What We Know About Jihad al-Shamie, the Manchester Synagogue Attacker

Among local residents, Jihad al-Shamie gave the impression of having a relatively normal life: a man with a newborn who exercised with dumbbells and frequently blocked parking spaces in front of the home he resided alongside his parents.

Born to a trauma surgeon, Shamie was thought to experience a content early years, with siblings who were younger who went on to have notable jobs in technology and pharmacology.

But since he was shot dead after carrying out a violent act against a synagogue, a fuller picture has been revealed. Investigators found that Shamie was previously declared insolvency, convicted low-level criminal and an alleged rapist when he set upon worshippers celebrating the religious holiday.

A Normal Childhood

Jihad al-Shamie had what appeared to be a typical early life in Manchester in the 1990s. Through family recordings recorded to send to his grandfather in Syria, he pets a kitten in the family garden, informing his parent he wants to feed it; in different footage he helps his sibling on a playground equipment in the yard.

Shamie shared his childhood with brothers born after him, the family enjoying days out to entertainment venue, wildlife attraction and the shopping complex, and the boys took part in holiday theatrical productions during the festive season.

In their previous residence, near the healthcare institution where Shamie’s father previously worked, local residents recalled a “ordinary kid” who was member of a “respectable home”.

He would engage harmoniously with youngsters on the street, and the only unusual thing someone remembered was that he devoted extensive hours playing on a handheld computer game – to the point that it caused excessive blinking.

“The family seemed fine, the parent was employed across the street, he came across as friendly, always spoke to me. They seemed like decent people, the mother always chatted to us. He engaged with electronic devices, he would spend entire days playing, his eyes would frequently blink.”

‘A Regular Young Man’

Residents living in his peaceful neighborhood in Prestwich portrayed him as a “simple, regular individual” who would regularly train in his yard area, lifting sets of weights, with a neighbor mentioning he regularly parked his car “badly” outside her house.

The relatives apparently transferred to the semi-detached house, about two miles from the scene of the attack, approximately fifteen years back, when Shamie was about to turn 20. While the brothers were growing up, the family lived in nearby Crumpsall.

Child of a Medical Specialist

His dad, Faraj al-Shamie, worked globally as a medical specialist, practicing in dangerous regions worldwide, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He was engaged with humanitarian organizations, like the global Red Cross committee, and studied under renowned surgeon David Nott in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Family Statement

Faraj al-Shamie has separated the relatives from his child's violent actions, publishing a message through social media that stated: “Reports emerging from Manchester concerning the violent incident directed against a Hebrew temple has been a extremely troubling for our household.

“The household members both domestically and internationally vehemently denounces this terrible deed, which targeted peaceful, innocent civilians. We completely separate ourselves from these violent actions and communicate our intense surprise and sadness over what has happened. We extend our sympathy to the injured and their loved ones, and we hope for their resilience and peace.”

Personal Life

Shamie had previously worked as a tutor, providing lessons in English and programming. Still, documentation indicated he lacked employment in government insolvency records which revealed he sought financial assistance the previous September while residing with his parents. Just one month later, his dad uploaded an image of him with a newborn, describing the photo “Great Welcome Grandson”.

History of Offenses

It was revealed that Shamie was on police bail for rape when he operated his compact dark vehicle into religious attendees at the temple. The timing remains unclear the alleged sex attack happened but it is understood to have been this year. He was being thoroughly examined by local law enforcement.

He had encountered problems earlier, according to sources, who mentioned his previous convictions for other less-serious offences. He was however not tracked by counter-terror police or protection organizations before the incident.
