Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australian One-Day International Squad Against India

Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-match ODI series facing India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a unexpected call-up.

Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international team following managing only a single run in each of his two innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a best innings of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.

The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.

Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates

Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw also hit a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a return to the Test team as Australia look for a solution to their top-order woes.

Pace Additions and Fitness Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after being rested since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.

BBL performer Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.

Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue by the time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Team Announcement Strategy and Schedule

Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to secure a series clean sweep last week.

“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
